Infections in the mouth can rapidly become life threatening! Bacteria travels from abscessed teeth and infections in the gums and bone tissues surrounding teeth to other vital structures like the carotid arteries, lungs, brain, heart, artificial joints and also crosses the placenta to developing babies. Infections and cancers in the head and neck need not move far to cause potential death. Low grade oral infections may be painless and go undetected yet become lethal. Pain is usually a late sign of chronic damage. Patients are not always aware of gum disease and tooth decay progressing to a point when teeth and or bone is lost. The importance of cleaning your teeth thoroughly every day and regular 6 month dental check-ups is very important! Exam and cleanings include screenings to find dental problems early. Don't ignore your dental health because it is key to keeping your general health.
Have you experienced or seen someone with a tooth ache in terrible pain or a grossly swollen face? This can happen very fast. The day before no symptoms may have been noticed yet the bacteria from the infection can travel to other parts of the body. Often wisdom teeth can flare up. Evaluation of wisdom teeth, even without pain or problem is highly recommended. The U.S. Surgeon General has called dental diseases "The Silent Epidemic." The care and health of your teeth and gums should not be under estimated.
